Pele has been moved into ‘end of life care’ according to reports in Brazil with the World Cup legend no longer responding to treatment for bowel cancer. The 82-year-old was taken to hospital on Tuesday night after concerns for his welfare and has now been moved into palliative care.
The footballing world has been awaiting news on Pele’s well-being after going into the Albert Einstein Hospital on Tuesday with reported generalised swelling and decompensated heart failure.
Pele’s family have tried to allay concerns over his health with his daughter Kely Nascimento stating on Instagram that ‘there was no emergency’ while the Brazilian legend himself stated that it had been one of his routine ‘monthly’ visits as he continued his treatment for cancer.
However, Brazilian publication Folha de Sao Paulo has now sadly reported that Pele is no longer responding to chemotherapy and has been moved into palliative care. He will no longer be given any invasive treatments but will continue to receive therapies and medication in order to keep him comfortable.
Palliative care is given to patients with life-threatening conditions or diseases and is considered to be end-of-life care.
